What is a speed test and how do you use it?
A speed test is a tool you use to test your internet connection. It tells you the amount of time it takes for data to travel between two points on the internet, typically referred to as “ping” time. https://www.charterspeedtest.info/midco-speed-test/
When you run a speed test, you are checking if any issues exist with your network or device that might be slowing it down.
If you open up your browser and notice that it takes a long time to load websites, then the first thing you want to do is run a speed test to see if there are any issues with your internet connection.
How to take a speed test:
There are a variety of different speed tests out there, but we recommend using one by Ookla. To use it, all you need to do is go onto the site and click “Start Test”. Make sure that nothing else is running on your computer when you do this as it can cause interruptions with your results.
The test takes a little time as it needs to download a big file from speedtest.net, but once it’s done you’ll be presented with your results. If the numbers look good then you know that there aren’t any issues with your internet connection and so you should look at what is slowing down your browser instead.
If things don’t seem right, however, it’s a good idea to contact your internet service provider and ask them what they think. Sometimes the download speeds you see on the site are different from what they actually give you because of all the extra files that need downloading before a page will show up.
What does the result of my speed test mean?
If you’re a happy bunny at this point and you get your result then great! You can now play games, stream media or download files with the peace of mind that your internet is up to the task.
The speeds that Speedtest reports are not absolute guarantees of how fast your connection is, but they do give you an indication of whether it’s fast enough to cope with the kind of usage you have in mind.
Why is my internet so slow, what can I do about it?
If your connection seems slow then the first thing to do is get a speed test result. You can get either of the tests I’ve detailed above from www.speedtest.net , they’re free and give an accurate measure of how fast your internet really is.
If you see your speed at a glacial pace or if it’s so slow it doesn’t even register then you need to figure out how to get your speeds up.
You might just have too many people in the house using the internet at once, if so then your first step is to split the connection into different ones using our guide on setting up multiple connections for sharing .
How to improve your home’s Wi-Fi network?
If it’s not slow internet that’s the problem then you could be suffering from Wi-Fi interference. To get the most out of your broadband connection it’s crucial to have a good quality wireless router which offers strong, reliable coverage.
If the signal is weak in certain parts of your house or if there are too many obstructions between your laptop and the router, you’ll want to start considering a new one.
When choosing a wireless router, make sure it has extra antennas – these will direct the Wi-Fi signal around your home with more strength and consistency.
Newer models can help boost coverage too by providing ‘filler’ signals where there are gaps in your main connection. You can test your internet connection speed without paying for it by using our free tool.
